Mogadishu, Somalia;  Somalia is facing a severe political crisis with President Hassan Sheik Mohamud’s mandate set to expire this Friday, sparking fears of a power vacuum and potential takeover by Al-Shabaab militants. The international community, including the US and the UK, is urging politicians to reach an electoral agreement, but the lack of consensus and the expired mandates of parliament and federal state members are exacerbating the situation ¹ ².

The African Union (AU) peacekeepers’ departure, potentially due to funding cuts from the EU and US, could create an opportunity for Al-Shabaab to gain control. Opposition leaders, including former presidents Farmaajo and Sheik Sharif, are calling for President Hassan Sheik to step down and return to the election table.

Amnesty International has condemned the government’s actions, labeling them as dictatorial and politically motivated, particularly the arrest of young activist Sadia Bajaj for speaking out against corruption.

The situation is dire, with Somalia’s political stability hanging in the balance and civil war looming. The UN and AU are urging dialogue and consensus on the election process.
